Disneyland Removes Park Hopping Restriction June 9: The Best Time to Hop

Disneyland confirmed it today, May 19: starting June 9, the 11am park hopping restriction is gone. Guests with Park Hopper tickets can move between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure at any time, including before 11am.

That sounds like a small convenience update. It is more significant than that. The 11am rule did not just delay when you could hop. It forced guests into both parks at exactly the wrong time. We have been tracking wait times at both parks for years, and the data shows what that restriction was actually costing you.

What changed and what did not

Under the old rule, you had to tap into your originally reserved park first and then wait until 11am to cross. Starting June 9 neither applies. You pick whichever park you want, enter whenever you want, in any order.

What has not changed: you still need a park reservation for your starting park. Hopping is still subject to capacity. If a park fills up, incoming hoppers may be held at the esplanade gate. This is rare except on peak holiday weekends, and it affects Disneyland more than DCA.

Disneyland: when to ride what

The grid below shows average wait times for Disneyland's three busiest rides, hour by hour. Every cell you see is real data from our tracking system. Hover over any cell to focus on that time slot.

Indiana Jones and Space Mountain at rope drop are the clearest opportunity in the resort. Indiana Jones averages 29 min at 8am and Space Mountain 30 min. Both effectively double by mid-morning and plateau around 50-60 min for the rest of the day. These two rides justify showing up at open.

Rise of the Resistance opens high and peaks early. At 49 min at 8am it is already the longest wait in the park, peaking at 66 min by 11am. Then it gradually declines all day, reaching 44 min by 9pm. This is the ride to close out the night, not to open with.

Space Mountain has an unusually late peak. Most rides plateau by early afternoon. Space Mountain keeps climbing, hitting 61 min at 6pm. If you return to Disneyland in the evening, Rise of the Resistance is the better call. Space Mountain at 54 min at 8pm is not the bargain it appears.

DCA: when to ride what

Disney California Adventure tells a different story. The top rides here are significantly longer on average, and the afternoon climb is steeper.

Radiator Springs Racers has a counter-intuitive dip at 9am. It opens at 82 min, drops to 72 min at 9am, then climbs back to 88 min at 10am and stays above 90 min for most of the day, peaking at 95 min at 5pm. That 9am window is the only time all day it is below 82 min. If you start at DCA, hit Guardians at open (43 min) and Radiator by 9am.

Guardians never lets up. It opens at 43 min and climbs to 83 min by 6pm, nearly doubling with no dip anywhere in the data. There is no recovery window. Every hour you wait, it gets worse.

Soarin' is the hidden rope drop value. At 29 min average at 8am it matches Indiana Jones across the esplanade. It is not the ride people sprint to, but at 29 min it is worth fitting in early. By 2pm it is at 69 min and stays there.

Three things worth knowing before you go

1
Radiator Springs Racers is cheapest at 9am, not 8am
The park's most popular ride drops from 82 min at open to 72 min at 9am before jumping back above 90 for the rest of the day. This is the one real dip in DCA's data. The new rule lets you cross from Disneyland at 10am and still catch it before it hits 92 min.
2
Evening at Disneyland is better than midday, not worse
Rise of the Resistance falls from 66 min at 11am to 44 min at 9pm. Indiana Jones drops from 51 min to 38 min. The evening return window is real. Space Mountain is the exception, peaking at 61 min at 6pm, so skip it if you come back late.
3
11am was the worst time to hop at both parks
At 11am, Disneyland's top rides average 51 to 66 min. DCA's average 60 to 92 min. That was the mandatory hop window under the old rule. Starting June 9 you can leave Disneyland at 10am, when DCA is 10 to 30 min shorter on every major ride than it will be two hours later.

Tap any section to see why

Hit Indiana Jones and Space Mountain at rope drop while both are under 30 min. Cross to DCA by 10am, one hour earlier than the old rule allowed, and you catch Radiator Springs before its 9am dip closes. Spend the afternoon at DCA working through Guardians and Soarin'. Return to Disneyland in the evening for Rise of the Resistance at 44 min, its daily low.

Why BTQ helps

The strategy above is based on historical averages. What changes day to day is how crowded the parks actually are.

On a slow Tuesday in October, Radiator Springs might sit at 50 min all afternoon. On a Saturday in July, its 9am dip might only bring it from 110 to 97 min. The same window exists, but the absolute number is different.

BTQ tracks wait times at both parks every few minutes and surfaces the windows as they happen in real time. When Radiator Springs hits its dip, you get an alert. When Rise of the Resistance drops into the 40s in the evening, you know before you cross the esplanade. When DCA is approaching capacity and hopping may be delayed, that shows up too.

The goal is to take the strategy the data supports and make it actionable on the day you are actually there.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need a park reservation after June 9?

Yes. You still need a reservation for your starting park. What changes is that you no longer need to tap into that park first, and you no longer have to wait until 11am before you can cross.

Can I enter whichever park I want first?

Yes. Starting June 9, if you have a DCA reservation and a Park Hopper ticket, you can enter Disneyland first, subject to availability. You are no longer required to visit your reserved park before hopping.

What if the park I want to hop into is at capacity?

Hopping is still subject to park capacity. If Disneyland is full, incoming hoppers may be held at the esplanade until capacity opens. This is uncommon but does happen on peak days. BTQ tracks live capacity at both parks so you can check before you walk over.

Is Lightning Lane still worth it with the new hopping rules?

It depends on how disciplined you are about timing. If you follow a rope drop strategy and hop by 10am, you can get through Indiana Jones, Space Mountain, Guardians, and Radiator Springs in under two hours with waits in the 30 to 88 min range. Lightning Lane becomes more valuable mid-afternoon when you are still in DCA and Guardians is at 75 plus minutes with no dip coming.

Which park should I start in?

The data points to Disneyland. Indiana Jones at 29 min and Space Mountain at 30 min at 8am are the lowest waits for any major ride in the resort. Starting at DCA means facing Radiator Springs at 82 min immediately. The rope drop advantage is bigger at Disneyland.
