Every fall, the same worry shows up in trip planning forums: Halloween Horror Nights is running, so Universal Orlando must be packed. We checked that assumption against the wait times we recorded at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure over the 12 months to February 2026, a window that contains the whole 2025 event season.
The data says the opposite. September, the month the event kicks off, has the shortest daytime lines of the year at both day parks. The Incredible Hulk Coaster, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and Jurassic World VelociCoaster all run at about half their usual wait. Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, which has the longest average wait of any Orlando ride we track, comes down from 140 minutes to 103.
September has the shortest lines at both parks
Averaged across every ride during daytime operating hours, 9am to 5pm, here is how event season compares to the rest of the year:

Islands of Adventure is the clearer case: 20 minutes per ride in September, the lowest of any month, against 38 in February and 36 in January.
Universal Studios Florida averages 19 minutes in September, its quietest month outright, with August next at 22. Its busiest daytime month is December, at 28. Our Universal Studios Florida record starts at the end of May 2025, so its range covers June through February.
October climbs back up, to 26 minutes at Islands of Adventure and 25 at Universal Studios Florida, both inside each park's usual range. September is the calm stretch; October is an ordinary month. If you are visiting this October, plan for normal daytime waits. The September dip is the one to plan around next year.
Which rides drop the most in September
Park-wide averages understate what happens on the rides you actually care about. Comparing each ride's September daytime average with its 12-month daytime average:

All figures are daytime averages, 9am to 5pm, from March 2025 to February 2026. Each ride's own page covers all operating hours over a rolling 12 months, so its numbers differ from these.
The longest lines do not fall furthest. Hagrid's has the longest average wait of any ride in the resort and one of the smaller percentage drops, 26%. It is still the biggest saving in absolute minutes, 37 of them, which is why it belongs at the top of an event-season plan even though its percentage looks modest.
The steepest percentage falls are on Islands of Adventure's headliners. Flight of the Hippogriff, not in the table above, falls further still: from 50 minutes to 21, a 58% drop.
The catch: Universal Studios Florida closes early on event nights
The low daytime lines come with a trade-off: park hours. On event nights Universal Studios Florida closes to daytime guests in the late afternoon so the haunted houses can open. Check Universal's posted hours for your date before planning the day.
Islands of Adventure is the escape valve. It does not host the event and stays open into the evening, after Universal Studios Florida's day guests have left. The play: spend the shortened day at Universal Studios Florida, then walk over to Islands of Adventure while the crowds queue for haunted houses next door.
How to plan an event-season day
- Start at whichever park has your must-ride. The Universal Studios Florida ride list and the Islands of Adventure ride list show each ride's typical wait.
- On event days, treat Universal Studios Florida as a morning and early afternoon park. Ride Gringotts and Revenge of the Mummy before noon.
- Move to Islands of Adventure for the evening. It stays open after Universal Studios Florida clears out.
- Going to Halloween Horror Nights itself? That is a separate ticket and a separate night. The data here covers daytime operation only.
The 2026 event runs 49 select nights from August 28 to November 1. Check Universal's official calendar before booking, because the nights and park hours change.

One caveat worth naming: September is also the heart of hurricane season, and the low crowds partly reflect that risk. Travel insurance and a flexible ticket are reasonable companions to the shortest lines of the year.
