Most Disney trip planning runs on inherited advice: avoid spring break, skip summer, aim for January or February. People pass it around like it's fact.
At Hollywood Studios, a lot of it is wrong.
We went through BTQ's recorded wait times for Hollywood Studios, every ride, every day, from March 2025 through May 2026. Here's what we found.
Month by month
February averages longer waits than June, July, and August. The same month that travel blogs call "low season" is the second-busiest month of the year.
Presidents' Day is the reason. February 17, 2026 hit 65.8 minutes average across all open rides, fifth-worst single day in our entire dataset. The week around it wasn't much better. Without Presidents' Day, February looks reasonable. With it, it's spring break.
Summer is actually manageable because kids are still in school for most of it. Many states don't let out until mid-June and are back by late August. The window where every family is simultaneously free and in Orlando is shorter than it looks.
Busy days follow the school calendar
The same pattern shows up everywhere in the data: busy days happen when American schools are on break.
Presidents' Day, spring break (mid-March through early April), Christmas week, New Year's. Those are the worst stretches. Not because of weather or season, just because school is out.
The first two weeks of September are the best time to go. Schools are back, the park empties out fast, and almost nobody plans their trip for then. September 3, 2025 had a 19.8-minute average across all open rides. That's the lowest day we've recorded.
The worst day we've recorded: December 30, 2025 at 81.7 minutes. That's four times busier, and the two days are four months apart.
December is a good example of why month-level advice doesn't work. Three of the ten best days we've tracked fall in December (the 1st, 10th, and 17th). Three of the ten worst also fall in December (the 28th, 29th, 30th). "December is busy" tells you almost nothing about whether a specific day is worth going.
| Day | Avg wait |
|---|---|
| September 3, 2025 | 20 min |
| December 10, 2025 | 21 min |
| October 1, 2025 | 23 min |
| October 28, 2025 | 23 min |
| August 16, 2025 | 24 min |
| February 17, 2026 | 66 min |
| April 8, 2026 | 69 min |
| January 2, 2026 | 73 min |
| December 29, 2025 | 79 min |
| December 30, 2025 | 82 min |
One thing most guides get wrong about October: the first two weeks are not quiet. Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party brings big crowds, pushing waits up to 47-48 minutes average. That's worse than any week in summer. The park gets genuinely quiet around the third week of October, once the party crowds thin out. The Oct 27 week averaged 32 minutes, about the same as September.
What actually moves the needle
Not all decisions are equal. When you zoom out and look at what actually controls Slinky Dog Dash's wait time, three factors dominate, and they're not weighted the same.
Time of arrival is the single biggest lever you have. A 49-minute swing is more than most people save by picking the right month. The month you visit matters too: April versus September is a 32-minute difference on Slinky alone. The day of the week is almost noise, a 10-minute spread across all seven days means Wednesday versus Friday barely registers. If you're optimizing your visit, your clock-in time deserves more attention than your calendar.
Slinky averaged 68.8 minutes over a full year, highest of any ride we track across all of Disney World. On peak days it hit 220 minutes. Even on slow days it rarely drops below 30 minutes while the sun is up. Put it first at rope drop or last before close: it opens at 59 minutes and climbs fast, and the only real windows are before 8:30am and after 9pm.
Wait times by ride
The park-wide average hides a lot. Here's how each major ride actually plays out across the day.
Going late actually works here
Hollywood Studios has a real evening crowd drop, bigger than at other Disney parks.
Waits peak around 11am to noon and come down steadily after that. The drop speeds up after dinner when families with small kids head out. By 9pm the park feels completely different.
This matters more here than at most places because Hollywood Studios has the highest average waits of any Disney World park. Saving 30 minutes on Slinky Dog Dash isn't the same as saving 30 minutes on a ride that only peaks at 45.
| Ride | Avg wait before 8 PM | Avg wait after 8 PM |
|---|---|---|
| Slinky Dog Dash | 72 min | 44 min |
| Rise of the Resistance | 64 min | 35 min |
| Millennium Falcon | 47 min | 20 min |
Millennium Falcon after 8pm averages 20 minutes. Same ride, half the park, different hour. Rise of the Resistance at 9:30pm runs about 35 minutes. At 9:30am it's 67. If you're visiting during a busy week, planning your headliners for the evening is more useful than anything else on this list.
What BTQ tracks for you
BTQ tracks Hollywood Studios wait times every few minutes, across every ride that's running. When Slinky's post-9pm window opens early on a given day, you see it in the app before most people in the park have noticed. On a slow September Tuesday when everything drops under 30 minutes, you know it in real time.
On days like December 30, when the park hits 80-minute averages by mid-morning, you see the signal early enough to adjust your plan before you've already committed the whole day to it. The data is there. Getting it to you fast enough to act on it is the problem BTQ is built to solve.
What this means for your trip
Go in early September. The numbers on this are clear. Waits on a typical September weekday drop to the low 20s across the whole park. Almost no crowd calendar ranks it highly, but it's the best time of year to go.
Don't believe the "off-season" framing for February. Presidents' Day week is one of the five worst stretches of the year. Plan around it.
Skip the first two weeks of October. The Halloween party crowds make that window worse than summer. Go in late October instead.
Ride the headliners late. Rise of the Resistance, Slinky Dog Dash, and Smugglers Run all drop 25 to 30 minutes after 8pm. On a busy day that's the difference between riding all three and not.
Rope drop means Slinky. It's already at 59 minutes by 8am and it doesn't recover during the day. Everything else at Hollywood Studios can wait for evening. Slinky mostly can't.
Frequently asked questions
What is the least crowded time to visit Hollywood Studios?
Early September. The week after Labor Day is the quietest stretch we've tracked, with the best single day on record being September 3 at 19.8 minutes average. Schools are back in session, the summer crowds are gone, and the park hasn't hit its fall event season yet. Late October and early December are good alternatives if September doesn't work.
Is Hollywood Studios crowded in February?
More than people expect. February is the second-busiest month of the year, averaging 47.1 minutes per ride, which is higher than June, July, or August. Presidents' Day week specifically is brutal, usually landing in the top five worst weeks of the year. The "January and February are dead" advice doesn't hold for Hollywood Studios.
What time should you arrive at Hollywood Studios?
At park open or not at all. Waits more than double between 8 AM and 11 AM, the steepest morning curve of any Disney World park. If you can't make rope drop, the next good window is the last 90 minutes before close. Arriving between 10 AM and noon means you're walking into peak crowds with no real recovery option until evening.
When is Slinky Dog Dash least crowded?
Before 8:30 AM or after 9 PM, and there's not much else to say. It averages 59 minutes at 8 AM, climbs to 81 minutes by noon, and stays above 65 minutes most of the day. After 9 PM it drops to around 41 minutes, and closer to 32 near close. There's no midday window where it gets easier.
Is December a good time to visit Hollywood Studios?
Depends entirely on the dates. Early December (the 1st through the 17th) is one of the quietest times of year. December 10 had a 20.7-minute average, one of the lowest days we've seen. The week between Christmas and New Year's is the opposite: December 30 hit 81.7 minutes, the worst single day in our dataset. Same month, completely different experience.
Does going late in the evening actually help at Hollywood Studios?
Yes, more than at most parks. The crowds thin out faster here, especially after families with kids leave around dinner. Rise of the Resistance goes from 64 minutes during the day to 35 after 8 PM. Millennium Falcon goes from 47 to 20. If your visit falls during a busy period, planning the big rides for after 8 PM is the most practical thing you can do.
